Helical Anchors Are The New Thing
Over the many years Decksperts has been in business and working through various climate conditions, we have learned what works and what doesn’t work when building decks for our customers. One area we have recently improved is how we do our deck footings.
In Wisconsin we get some pretty brutal Winters. When building a deck, pergola or sunroom it is important to consider the elements. Typically deck footings are done with a concrete block that is driven into the ground with 4 pins. However, the frost heave puts force on the concrete block and can break it. We have recently switched to using Helical Piers or Helical Anchors.
Our investment in our Helical Pier Equipment was more than $30,000 but we feel confident in this deck footing system. When building your deck we do not disturb nearly as much of your yard as we would have with traditional concrete footing methods. Wash stone and mulch areas do not get contaminated with dirt and we do not have extra top soil to dispose of on your property. Best of all your deck build is finished quicker because there is no waiting for concrete to cure.
Benefits of Helical Pier Footings are listed below:
- Less mess, less yard disruption
- Faster installation, shortened deck build time by 1 or 2 days
- High loading capacity, one single footing can support up to 40 tons
- Can be used in high water table situations
- Resistant to frost heave
- Can be installed when unstable soil conditions are present
- Small footprint equipment for areas with limited access
- Can be installed all year around, in all weather conditions
- Galvanization can be used to combat corrosive soil conditions to extend the life of the structure up to 75 years
